Many of our animal patients are very small and require tiny doses of a drug. Some of the smaller animals for whom we compound medications include snakes, turtles, birds, ferrets, lizards, skinks, rabbits, and hedgehogs. These animals usually require a dosage that is considerably less than what is commercially available for either humans or animals. For more common pets such as dogs and cats, a variety of commercially available veterinary medications do exist. Still, there is often a need or desire for medication that is not commercially produced.
Most medications come in the form of a capsule, tablet, or liquid that is flavored for humans. Many pets will not easily take a capsule or tablet, and most pets will not take a liquid that is flavored with humans in mind.

Occasionally, pets require medicine that is extremely bitter tasting and almost impossible to deliver orally. In these cases, we can often incorporate the medicine into a transdermal gel that is applied to the animal’s ear and rubbed into the skin to be absorbed into the blood stream. Some examples of medications that we make available transdermally are Methimazole, Prednisolone, and Amitriptyline.
Another Veterinary need often addressed through compounding is the preparation of sterile products. At Lee Silsby Compounding Pharmacy, we have a Class 100 certified clean room where sterile products can be safely compounded. Many Veterinarians ask us to prepare sterile ear drops, eye drops, and injectables for their patients.
As with our human patients, we can also compound veterinary medications that are temporarily unavailable or have been discontinued due to lack of demand.
